The “butterfly effect” is the concept that small causes can have large effects. The Butterfly Effect Not-for-Profit (NFP) cultivates social consciousness and awareness encompassing the issue of unjust and disproportionate mass incarceration, particularly of women of color; and the helplessness experienced during incarceration and the re-entry process, by providing assistance to female survivors, their children and families.
The Butterfly Effect’s mission is to actively support and provide assistance to women, emphasizing healing as they grow through the re-entry process, re-establishing life and relationships, and re-learning lack of restrictions and free movement. This organization fulfills its mission by being of service and by offering the ministry of presence, and a host life-giving resources: life skills, life coaching, counseling, educational resources, scholarships, job readiness training, entrepreneurship training, wellness, and writing/telling your own story. We are compelled to live love!
Additionally, The Butterfly Effect NFP serves by educating and enhancing institutions’, churches’, and other charitable organizations’ awareness of the need of support from the village. One of the prolific goals of The Butterfly Effect is to partner these institutions with women re-entering the community, in an effort to equip our women with all they need to succeed, focusing on their individual journeys to excellence.
The Butterfly Effect takes A Journey to Your ExcellentSelf!℠
A Journey to Your ExcellentSelf℠ is our 12-month re-entry program encompassing R.I.S.E.℠, and a six-month accountability partnership. R.I.S.E.℠, a 24-week program, consists of four six-session modules: Respect; Integrity; Success; and Empowerment. The second half of the year expounds on Empowerment, by focusing on Accountability. During these series of workshops, trainings, and one-on-one sessions, we focus on accountability: Wellness – healthy living – nourishment and exercise for the mind, body, and spirit; Employment/Entrepreneurshipcheck-ins, ensuring participants stay on task with individual development and employment/entrepreneurial goals; and Writing – the healing qualities of telling your own story.
Curriculum building is a vital and critical part of this journey, as we share the process in training inside penal institutions, as well as churches and other charitable organizations. It is our goal to deliver the work of the organization during the time our sisters are living behind the walls of imprisonment, to better equip them in preparation for release, as well as upon release. We have also been challenged to train churches, and other institutions of hope, to grasp the significance of the ministry of presence and the precise meaning of being of service to our formerly incarcerated loved ones, with the goal of reducing the recidivism rate.
